Around the world of Essar

Essar Oil UK participates in the UKIFDA Expo 2022

Essar Oil UK Ltd (EOUKL) recently attended the UKIFDA Expo 2022 in Liverpool which also included the Future Fuels Conference.  At the event, EOUKL shared how the company is transforming for tomorrow by investing to become the first low carbon refinery in the UK.

The Expo is a two-day event and is the most important UK trade event for the liquid fuel industry.  It was a virtual conference last year due to the Covid pandemic, so it was great to see the Expo return to the Exhibition Centre in Liverpool on 27 and 28 April 2022.

The Exhibition featured over 100 exhibitors attracting owners of fuel distributors, depot managers, and personnel within HR, IT, finance and marketing, all operating across the manufacturing, distribution, supply, and technology sectors of the industry in the UK and across Europe.  There were live demonstrations, product reveals, and everyone was glad to get back to having those all-important face-to-face discussions. Visitors to the Essar stand stopped by for a chat, relaxed at our seating area, and few even challenge themselves on our racing simulator.

Essar shares its plans of becoming the first low carbon refinery in the UK

There was a great turnout at the event and Essar Oil UK had a ‘transforming for tomorrow’ stand, through which the company told the industry all the exciting plans that are in place to become the first low carbon refinery in the UK. Our Commercial & Logistics Teams enjoyed catching up with all the visitors to the stand and had many great discussions with them.

The Future Fuels Conference was hosted by leading industry speakers, and round-table discussions and a wide range of seminars were held across the two days, including insight from the HVO demonstration and how the future fuels landscape is shaping up.

On day two, Carlos Rojas, the Head of Marketing & Logistics at Essar Oil (UK) spoke about transforming for tomorrow with reference to hydrogen, sustainable aviation fuel and Essar’s continued commitment to becoming the UK’s first low carbon refinery.

Vertex Hydrogen, a new Essar-led joint venture aimed to drive down emissions

He also introduced Vertex Hydrogen which is a new Essar-led joint venture. The company is investing £1 billion over the next five years to drive down emissions, including the development by Vertex Hydrogen of new hydrogen production plants at Stanlow.  The plants are a key part of the HyNet North West decarbonisation cluster. In August last year, a £45 million investment has been made to install the UK’s first refinery furnace that is capable of running on a 100% hydrogen fuel source in the future.

Essar investing in sustainable aviation fuel

Essar is also working with Fulcrum BioEnergy to develop a new facility to convert non-recyclable household waste into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for use by airlines operating at UK airports. The facility will convert several hundred thousand tonnes of pre-processed waste, otherwise destined for incineration or landfill, into approximately 100 million litres of low carbon SAF annually.

UKIFDA 2022 has been a great success and the team are enthusiastically looking forward to the next event.
